Reinstalling
Norton/Symantec programs
after a failed installation or after you see error messages

|
Norton
Antivirus and Norton System Works (Symantec products) are commonly used to
protect computers from Viruses and other problems. We are not endorsing this
product nor would we attempt to discourage you from using the products. However
you may want to run some of the utilities (such as System Doctor) from the CD
rather installing them on your hard drive.
What do you do when they fail or become damaged or corrupted? Because of the
very fact they they are designed to prevent tampering with your computer, they
are also very difficult to uninstall and reinstall. Hopefully the text and links
below will help solve this problem.
Windows XP Windows

Find your
version of Windows in the list above, and follow the instructions first before
you go to the reinstall section
for Windows XP or Windows
98
We hope this will help with your installation procedures
If you already had Norton Antivirus installed and you are
having trouble removing it (this happens) you may need to go to this
location and follow the procedure outlined there. If you
are still unsuccessful you may have to remove every instance of Norton and
Symantec from your computer including from the registry. Warning Deleting
file from your computer and especially from the registry can cause programs to
not open or for the entire computer to crash. Be sure to back up your
registry.
See our Page
on this subject before proceeding.

registry.
See our short page on using an automated script right from your desktop to save
restore points just by clicking on an icon located on you desktop instead of
doing it manually as described below.
Delete all temporary
files
Temporary files and folders are created when you install programs and during
normal Windows operation. All Symantec products use the temporary folder during
the installation process. Too many files in the Windows Temporary folder can
cause the installation to fail.
The following steps show you how to delete these files and
folders. In most cases, it is safe for you to do this because they are no longer
needed. However, if you are not sure, instead of deleting the files and folders
when you are instructed, move them to a different folder or to external media,
such as a CD.
Note: These steps
assume that your computer is using the default Windows temporary folder setting.
If you have changed the temporary folder location to C:, then follow the steps
in the section "To verify the Temp variable" in the document Deleting
Windows temporary files and then continue with these instructions.
