Track the Turtles in Real Turtle Time

The large sea turtles were often mistook for a mermaids by sailors of old that had been deprive of a woman's company for too long. There were so many turtles in the days of sailing ships that several Islands were named "Tortugas" because they were inundated with turtles during the breeding season.  So common were turtles and the practice of naming island after them that the Cayman Islands were once named "La Tortugas" . Later it was determined that it was actually Iguanas that were sighted on the shores of Cayman, and it was renamed "Caymanos" because once again they mistook the iguanas as crocodiles.

Back to the turtles. In the last 60 years the population has drastically decreased as the oceans being net fished to feed the multiplying masses of humanity. Turtle are air breathing creature like we are and would get caught in these nets, sometimes intentionally, sometimes not. This would seal their fate, and their numbers declined rapidly. Now in an effort to understand the Turtle and their migratory and breeding habits, several of them have been outfitted with satellite transmitters to track their movements. You can go to the site we provide below to track the movements and learn their fates. This is in real time. Quite interesting and you will want to come back and check on them often.
