Mount Rushmore
Perhaps one of the nations greatest landmarks, pays tribute to 4 past Presidents. See more below.

South Dakota has broad expanses of prairie, mountain, lake and river-break country open for you and your walking shoes. You'll want to explore the state's hiking trails. Fall is also a great time for a hike...or a ride, or a drive to see South Dakota's fall foliage. Fishing and hunting enthusiasts love South Dakota for its great variety of wildlife and unbeatable locations. Motorcyclists enjoy South Dakota's wide-open spaces. One of the biggest events every summer is the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Cyclists rave about South Dakota’s awesome rides. Even the International Mountain Biking Association gave these trails an "A" grade.

You should see South Dakota in the winter. Skiing, snowmobiling, skating, ice fishing and the rest are more than fun adventures. They're wonderful excuses to sightsee in the cold!

South Dakota’s history reads like an adventure story. It’s a tale of Plains Indians, explorers and pioneers. And it features names like Crazy Horse, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Lewis and Clark, and Wild Bill Hitchcock. When you visit South Dakota, you’ll find many opportunities to experience first-hand our rich history and heritage.

Whether you’re into family fun, Western adventure, Plains Indian culture, or the extreme outdoors, you'll find it in South Dakota.

Mount Rushmore
Snuggled in the Black Mountains of South Dakota, stands a great white rock carving, that in itself preserves the American heritage and  gives the future rock solid determination, to hold dear, all that the great men of the rock envisioned and fought for.

Faces of Rushmore -  Founding fathers and Presidents:

    • George Washington

    • Thomas Jefferson

    • Abraham Lincoln

    • Theodore Roosevelt

The birth of the nation was guided by the vision and courage of George Washington. Thomas Jefferson always had dreams of a greater, more perfect nation, first in the words of the Declaration of Independence and later in the expansion of our nation through the Louisiana Purchase. Preservation of the union was paramount to Abraham Lincoln, a nation where all men were free and equal. At the turn of the Twentieth Century Theodore Roosevelt envisioned a great nation, a leader on the world stage, our nation was changing from a rural republic to a world power. The ideals of these presidents laid a foundation for the United States of America as solid as the rock from which their figures were carved.

The sheer size of the mountain carving on Mount Rushmore evokes a sense of awe in those who view it. This view below was taken just about a mile before the visitor's center
