  Great Smoky Mountains
Take a deep breath of refreshing mountain air, watch
a waterfall trickle down the mountainside; visit an
authentic Indian Village; get away from it all and let
your cares fade away in the cool Blue Ridge
Mountains.

Asheville, North Carolina - Nestled between the
Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, in North
Carolina's southwestern region is one of the most
visited areas in the eastern park of the United States.
The Great Smoky Mountains lie to the west offering
many exciting outdoor activities and one of the most
visited national parks (Great Smoky Mountain
National Park). From the spectacular mountain
scenery to the world-class Biltmore Estate, your
family is sure to have a wonderful vacation in
Asheville.

Outdoor Activities
Whether you like hiking, fishing, kayaking, camping,
canoeing, tubing or riding the rapids, you will find
your favorite sport in the beautiful Blue Ridge
Mountains.

Biltmore Estate
Built by George Vanderbilt in the late 19th century,
America’s largest private home, the Victorian-era 255-
room Biltmore House has its original collection of
50,000 furnishings, artwork and antiques. The setting
is on an 8,000-acre estate with fabulous gardens and
a winery. Plan to spend a good portion of a day at
the Biltmore Estate.

Blue Ridge Parkway
Considered the nation’s most scenic highway, the
470-mile roadway winds through the Blue Ridge
Mountains, through Asheville and into the entrance of
the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Cold
Mountain is located along the Blue Ridge Parkway
just past Wagon Road Gap. Since the Christmas Day
release of the movie “Cold Mountain”, this has
become one of the most famous peaks in America.
There are many overlooks, roadside exhibits, hiking
trails and other great attractions along the parkway.

Mount Mitchell
This highest point in eastern America is located an
hour's drive northeast of Asheville on the Blue Ridge
Parkway. The 6,684 feet summit can be accessed by
car, but you might want to hike from the Black
Mountain Campground for an exhilarating
experience. Breathtaking view from the top of Black
Mountain.

Craggy Gardens
Located 17 miles northeast of Asheville on the Blue
Ridge Parkway – great picnic and hiking area.  Most
beautiful time to visit is the month of June when the
rhododendrons are blooming.

Oconaluftee Indian Village and “Unto These
Hills”

Don’t miss this authentic 18th century Cherokee
Indian Village and “Unto These Hills” which brings the
history, culture and traditions of Cherokee Indians to
the stage in an outdoor drama.  May 15 – October 25

along with a fully narrated tour.

Carolina Nights Dinner Show

Located in beautiful Maggie Valley, the Carolina
Nights Dinner Show combines good food with
country, bluegrass, contemporary or gospel music
along with a comedy act for exciting family
entertainment.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

Home of famous poet and biographer Carl Sandburg,
the site preserves and protects over 260 acres of
land, 50 historic structures and over five miles of
trails. The house and farm are open to the public for
guided tours.

Chimney Rock Park

Chimney Rock Park, a 1000-acre scenic attraction
located 25 miles southeast of Asheville - offers the
best of the mountains in one place - spectacular 75-
mile views, hiking trails for all ages, a 404-foot
waterfall, picnic areas, Nature Center, Native Plant
Nursery, and much more.  Ride the 26-story elevator
to the top of the "Rock". Experience the lush scenery
featured in the film "The Last of the Mohicans”.

Thomas Wolfe Memorial

Thomas Wolfe's childhood home, which he
immortalized in "Look Homeward Angel," is almost
exactly the same as when he lived there, and offers
tours and information about his life and works.

Grove Park Inn

This Inn provides guests with majestic views of the
legendary Blue Ridge Mountains. Pamper yourself –
enjoy the spectacular pool with a glass atrium and
outdoor whirlpool where you can watch the sunset.  
Its splendid views, old world charm, and Southern

Western North Carolina Nature Center

Located on a 42-acres Natural Heritage site and
voted "best place to take kids" in Western North
Carolina. People of all ages enjoy observing the
butterfly garden, encountering the red wolf, mountain
lions and bobcats; petting the farm animals, and
exploring the interactive Nature Lab.

North Carolina Arboretum

On 426 acres nestled in one of the most beautiful
natural settings in the United States with mountain
peaks and 1.8 miles of the Bent Creek stream
running through the center of the Arboretum.
