Montana

Montana Big Sky Country.
It is easy to understand why it is called "Big Sky".  When traveling this state you will find a remarkable lack of trees and therefore an uninhibited view of the horizon. This maens you don't have to look up to see the sky you only have to look in any direction but down.

Now that is not to say that there are no trees as this state is large enough to have great expanses of varied terrain including the foothills and Rocky Mountains. The Yellowstone National Park  has it's northern border and entrances within Montana so you just know this is a beautiful state.  Because of the many physical characteristics, Montana offers many activities for your enjoyment. In fact life here is centered around getting out and doing something so much in fact that the State Government has gone to some lengths to produce a website dealing with this matter. You may want look at the extensive Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website as it covers many of the activities that that we encourage such as Hunting,  Fishing and wildlife viewing. Many more of the activities such as Hiking, Cycling  and Skiing  are also very popular. Given the varied terrain and the geological make up of the country side Montana is a great place to go Rock Hounding or trying you hand at panning for gold.
At one time many million years ago this area was roamed by the dinosaurs and every now and then some one stumble on an exceptional find. While combing the terrain and looking  for the more common features like  semi- precious gemstone you may come across an artifact from the native Americans that once hunted and lived in these areas. Arrow heads or points as they are common called have been found in many locations attributing to the fact that this was once the home to many person pre the white man's arrival.

Hunting in Montana:

While Buffalo are not roaming wild any longer and are not allowed to be hunted, the hunting in Montana is second to none.  This state offer some of the finest in big game hunting including Deer, Elk, Bighorn Sheep, Moose, the elusive Mountain Goat, the beautiful Antelope and even Black Bear and Mountain Lion (Cougar). Where else are you going to find such a variety
Up land Game Birds Like the grouse, Pheasant Partridge and Turkey are plentiful and help to round out the hunting experience and put a little some thing else on the table.
For those of us to whom shooting a game bird in flight is king then waterfowl are of no short supply. You are able to get licenses for Coots, Ducks, Geese and surprise, surprise, Swan.
Other migratory bird you can work into your hunting trips are the mourning Dove, the Common Snipe and if you should care to, the Sandhill Crane.

The Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks website as mentioned above covers some aspects of  this sport such as licenses  Locations and even an online hunt planning page.

Fishing:

The website mentioned Above also has a section on fishing and will provide you with maps and report on certain locations. Most of the steams are considered trout streams and are great for fly bait and lure fishing. There are some restrictions on what can't be used for bait. If you are going to be in a particular town and would like to know what fishing spots are nearby, They have a neat fishing guide to help you quickly locate a fishing spot. This will save you from having to drive around and just hope to stumble across a good hole. There as everal we cams that will let you see the conditions before you go out but even then you need to get the forecast as thing can change relatively quickly.

The predominant fish in this areaseems to be the trout family in the moving waters and both the trout and the walleye in the lakes and resevoirs.

Weather in Montana:

Because of the varied terrain and the size of the state the waether can vary through out it. It is generally very pleasant in the Spring summer and fall but the winter can be quite harsh due to the artic air coming down out of Canada. The winter weather can be deceiving especially to hunters. There is a quirk in the weather system that effects the Montana and Alberta weather. It is called the "chinook". This is where the weather can be freezing cold one day and thawing the next. The Warm air from the pacific has all the energy stored in it and compresses it as it rises over the mountain. When it come tumbling down the Eastern side of them it release it and causes it to feel like shirt sleeve weather. Not only does this make for a lot of slush on the roads but it may fool  a novice into thinking that they don't need to take cold weather gear with them. As soon as the wind swings around from the North again the temperature can fall drastically and all this wet snow can freeze in no time at all. This can be disastrous for some unprepared person in the woods or even for drivers on the roads. Check on the weather using the NOAA website before venturing out.

State of the State:
The face of the cities in Montana is changing, although slightly slower than many other parts of the country. The rustic charm of the lifestyle here has begun to appeal to the masses. After the 1992 movie of "A River Runs Through It", urban exiles by the Humveeful began migrating to the Gallatin Valley in search of the lodgepole-pine lifestyle.  With them came what they felt was the way life should be in the western state and a some of what they wanted it to become. They brought their SUVs with the 4X4  features that most had never learned to use, and they brought the Levi's. Not that these weren't already here but they have been a necessity and not a fashion accessory.

Places like Bozeman have felt a tremendous impact from the population increase. Designer store are everywhere a nd a coffee shop's on every corner, yet it ha managed to retain its charm. You can still see a cowboy or two in town and there are more actual guns than blow driers.

Generally you will find a mix of nature activist, tycoons, and sportsmen  al sharing the same coffee bar and trying to talk like a local before they head off to the wilds to experience what they came here for.

Tip:
There is no need to try to impress anyone here. You will do better by by being and letting be.

For a great variety of  maps see the University of Texas Library.

The Yellowstone National Park isn't in any one state but  has entrances in 2 states Montana and Wyoming.  To see the National Park Services website on this park go to our Parks page that contains links to all the parks within the system.
