of the grounds The next Sun N Fun 2007
April 17 - 23, 2007 If you like to fly or just enjoy being around airplanes and pilots then you should consider being at the Sun N Fun annual Fly In. This takes place every year around the middle of April in sunny Lakeland Fl. This is a great way to shake of the cobwebs after a long winter.
The experimental class of aircraft are those built by amateurs or individual. Some are from kits other from a set of proven plans and then you have the Wright Brother sorts that develop their own ideas and create some new form in the sky. Recent years have seen a few changes in the way some of these aircraft are built. Many are still rag and tube or a metal tube frame predominantly cover with cloth. The ever popular aluminum sheet metal over a tube frame construction is probably the most often completed of the homebuilts. In this family the RV series by Van's aircraft seem to rule the skies in numbers. There are many others, such as the Harmon rocket and the Zenith but none has seen the popularity that the RVs have. Recently composites have made great in roads in the aircraft kit industry. These are predominantly molded pieces that are put together much like the model airplanes and car that many of us built at some point in our life. Some of the better known of the composite airplane kits is the descendants of the Glasair line the New Glastar. The Eze Family of canard aircraft look as though they are flying backward but is actually more efficient the conventional airplane. Out of Australia has come the Jabiru a stable high wing composite aircraft. Then you have the amphibious Seawind. A graceful flying boat that unfortunately is no longer available in kit form as the company has decided to go into manufacturing a certified production model, making the existing kit extremely desirable amongst homebuilders. If you are a member of the EAA you can get a special ticket that allows you to walk the flight line and look at theses unique airplanes up close. Often times the pilots or builders will be on hand to answer many of your questions. There are lots of vendors selling just about everything you might need to build your own aircraft. You can find tools, electronics, building material, manuals, and attend the workshops hosted by the vendors. Many of the workshops are "hands on" and you can try your hand at TIG welding or running an English wheel or even make a hub cap using a mallet and shot bag. There is a great air museum on the site where you can spend hours looking at the aircraft in detail. For a direct link to the official site for Sun N Fun click here http://www.sun-n-fun.org/content/
