The Grand Canyon is truly Grand. No matter how many times you have seen it on
TV, it is still difficult to grasp the enormity of it. It's huge. The pictures above
are from the North rim and you can't look down the length, but even looking
across the width is extremely impressive.

Grand Canyon is in the northwest corner of Arizona, close
to the borders of Utah and Nevada. The Colorado River, which flows through
the canyon, draws water from seven states, but the feature we know as
Grand Canyon is entirely in Arizona. The Colorado River is longer than
Grand Canyon, flowing 1,450 miles from the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to
the Gulf of California in Mexico. A trip to the bottom of the canyon and
back (on foot or by mule) is a two-day journey. Rim-to-rim hikers
generally take three days one-way to get from the North Rim to the South
Rim. To see the entire canyon by raft
Kayaking
or Canoeing,
may take two weeks or longer, but shorter excursions are also
available. Experienced backpackers have spent weeks in the more remote
areas of the canyon.

Observing the bands of color created by the deposition of minerals and ores
during different periods in our earth's history, gives you an inkling into the
amount of time that it took to create the land and then to cut it back
down. When you compound that with the fact that the entire area was once
under water for millions of years, and it is now approximately 8,000 ft above
sea level at the rim, it makes the historical time of man puny by comparison.
How much change have you seen in the elevation in your yard over you
lifetime?
This is a great place to sit and reflect, go Camping
or hiking,
take
photographs or just do
some Scenic
Viewing. You may want to plan on staying at the lodge so that you
can experience the sun both rising and setting over the lip of the canyon.
Dinning is available at the lodge and you will find that Mule trail rides are
available in the park. If you would like to view the Canyon from the air there
are several companies that offer this service, primarily out of Las Vegas. You may want to inquire with the
National Park Service
to see if they will allow you to go Canyoneering
and Rockclimbing.
You can make arrangements to hike down the canyon. If you are
considering doing this then by all means utilize our Hiking
Tips and printable Hiking
Checklist and be sure to make up or purchase a good Day
Pack.
