A huge cave that has proven to be inaccessible to most of the public but has
become a favorite amongst those that have hiked up, and I say up, to it.
Usually just getting to the entrance proves to be too much to many who have not
kept their self in good physical shape. See our Caving Guide for the
minimum
requirements for those that want go caving.
The entrance to the cave cannot be seen until you have climbed up a wash between two mountains and over boulders. Fun!. Once you are there,
the entrance cuts down into the mountainside at about a 45 degree angle.
Immediately inside you will see plate formations creating the ceiling.
The cave has numerous large rooms some large enough to hold a sports stadium.
It is awesome. If tight spots are your passion then you will also find them
here. The rock the cave is cut in, is primarily limestone in composition. In fact
you can watch the destruction of a mountain just like it across the valley, that is being torn
down bit by bit and turned into cement dust. The passages were cut by water
containing carbonic acid , a natural occurring solution that occurs when carbon
dioxide combines with water. The greatest amount of passaging came while the
caves were under the water table and later given character during the deposition
period where the water gives up the minerals that it was carrying in solution, to
form the classic Stalagmites and Stalactites. Unfortunately Cadomin cave has
suffered some abuse to these types of formations but is well worth the
trip to see it.
You may find a website that mentions Cadomin cave, trying to
discourage you from visiting the cave. This is because they have taken a possessive
stance about it, but the cave is open to all, except during the bat hibernating
period between September 1st and April
30th..
If you plan to make a weekend out of it, then campsites can be found at the
Whitehorse Campground approximately 5 km south of the Cadomin cave parking
lot.
