Surfer Greats     Locations and Events     Glossary   How to surf

Surfing

This great and sometimes not so graceful sport was made famous in the sixties by the longboards. "Hanging ten" became a vernacular of the American language even though most had never been on a board. The movie industry  (Big WednesdayEndless Summer  ) glamorized it with beach parties and hotrods but today things have changed but are still the same.

Thanks to the surfing great Laird Hamiltons and a couple of his friends, surfers now ride the monster big waves which were not  believed to be ride-able. Using helicopters or PWCs to tow them out, gives the surfer more rides per cycle than ever before. Sure beats paddling out against the incoming waves. Pulling the moves are critical in competition but busting a huge snap is rewarding even without a trophy. Like most other radical sports, surfing is about pushing the boundaries, your personal and those of nature.

More and more locations are becoming popular surfing destinations. Your choices are not limited to Hawaii and California as was so often depicted, but with the right weather, the Jersey shore and the Florida Atlantic and many other surfs have gotten more play in recent years. And who would have thought that Alaska (Yakutat) would be a surfing destination but it is. But the big rides may be found in such far off locales as South Africa and Australia. Many serious surfer has moved to locations with good waves while other watch the weather and head out to destinations that may not be well known to travel agents. A hurricane approaching may be frightening for those that live along the projected landfall zone, but to a surfer it is manna from heaven.  Yeah there may be a spiritual connection between the surfer, his  composite board and God, but for most, it is the bottom formation and the driving forces, plain and simple. Reoccurring climatic conditions such as El Nino has a predictable effect on the surf and is closely watched by surfers.

This begins to explain why there is no usable surf in most places as there needs to be a bottom slope that is conducive to  wave formation and a movement in the water, preferably distant wind driven and not by current, unless you are into the radical river rapids surfing that  seems to be the summer equivalent of snowboarding.

A dialect has risen amongst the surfer and to be fluent you may want to visit the Glossary

Many countries have mediocre waves that have not yet been exploited, and may not be in the leagues that would draw some of the international greats, but yet may provide a training ground or at least be a weekend boredom breaker. Places like Grand Cayman Island would be expected to have all thing to with the water, yet surfing is only now being developed as a viable sport. There is only one area, at the East end near the blow holes that provides decent low to mid range waves, . No white sandy beaches here. Most of the beach is covered with coral heads washed up from the likes of the 32 storm, Gilbert and Ivan. But with someone on a Personal Water Craft running a towing service your chances of copping a decent ride providing the winds are out of the Southeast, which they generally are.

The more you get to do a sport the more you will enjoy it. We have found that being prepared to leave at a moment notice will increase the number of time that you will actually get out and do it. Ultimately the best way to be prepared is to have all the necessary gear already stored in a "gear trailer". This is a trailer dedicated to this purpose. READ ON.
