Anousheh Ansari - The first female space tourist

Hats off to this brave lady who is not only to become the worlds first female Space tourist but also to her being a successful business woman. You may recognize her name from the "Ansari X-PRIZE" featured in our page on Space Travel. For those of you who are fairly new to our site or not familiar with the "Out of this World" section that deals with the emerging category of Activities in Space, The Ansari X-PRIZE was a 10 million dollar award to the first private entity to achieve space flight. This was achieved by Burt Rutan and his team at Scaled Composites back in October 4 of 2004. To qualify they had to penetrate outer space and then return to earth and then back again  which they did in 5 days. The X-PRIZE was renamed the Ansari X-PRIZE in honor of the money Anousheh Ansari donated to make it possible, and now she is traveling to outer space for 9 days, aboard a Russian spacecraft (expedition 14). It is only fitting that she should go, after showing such an interest in space exploration. However it isn't cheap. She had to fork over 20 million for her 9 day journey where she will not have luxury accommodations but will be accommodated like one of the crew on the International Space Station.

Anousheh Left Iran 2 decades ago because she wanted to study technology and such a desire by a woman in a rigid  Muslim   dictated country was an impossibility. She and her family immigrated to the USA so she could follow her dream. Not only did she get an education but she and her husband started a hi-tech company which they sold for a sizable fortune. Now that is a success story if ever there was one. And now she can add  space travel to her portfolio.

See the official BIO for Mrs.  Anousheh Ansari     as posted on the NASA website, or visit Anousheh's own blog which is updated in real time.
