Glossary
Latitude: Imaginary line -shown on maps_ that run from East to West dividing the world into 360 disk like sections. These are parallel to each other and start at 0 on the equator. They are represented with a degree symbol (°) and will have the designation of N for North of S for South. Longitude: Imaginary line -shown on maps_ that run from pole to pole, dividing the world into 360 sections (one for each degree of a circle), These are approximately 60 miles apart at the equator. Tip remember Longitude equals long as each of the line circle the world at the longest points as opposed to Latitudes which become successively shorter the farther they are from the equator. Longitudes state at 0 which runs through Greenwich England. They are represented with a degree symbol (°) and will have the designation of E for East of W for West. Minutes: Each Minute is 1/60 of either a Longitude or Latitude and is represented and followed by a ' mark when written in standard DMS and is followed by a decimal point (.) when written in a decimal format. Seconds: Each Second is 1/60 of a minute. Seconds is also expressed in decimal format which is much more precise. There doesn't seem to be one set format for this and can be to the 3rd or 4th decimal point. In the coordinates example below the seconds are displayed in 3rd decimal position or in 1/1000 of a minute, where as 4th decimal position would be 1/10000 of minute. Coordinates: A numerical statement indicating a position. and is indicated as the Latitude and Longitude, minutes and seconds such as 24°31'49"N and 081°47'25"W or in decimal format 24°31.817N and 081°47.491W which is the coordinates for the furthest south location in the contiguous USA, located on the Southern Tip of Key West Florida. Waypoint: A coordinate that refers to a destination point and is usually saved in a GPS library often called number and can actually be traded as intellectual property amongst commercial fishermen.
