Stalking: The
true expression of hunting. While more demanding and difficult than
still hunting it is the most satisfying. It is your skills to get within
range of your chosen prey that really counts. The methods
involved will vary depending upon what you are hunting. In the article we
will address the stalking of big game and upland birds.
Still hunting: Setting up stands or blinds and how to successfully
hunt from them.
Dogs: Selecting and Training.
Everyone has a favorite breed and admittedly some breeds are
better than others for a particular type of Hunting. Send
in your knowledge on this subject
Game Ranches: What to expect.
Theses are exactly what their name implies. A ranch which is
stocked with game animals and sometimes several types and even
some exotic ones that are normally only found in other countries.
Because some or most of the game species are able to leap over
the average cattle fence, the fences will be 8-10 feet high (3
meters) or higher if necessary in certain locations. The game is
permitted to wander and forage for food as they would in the
wild but because of the number of animals in a relatively small
area they have to have supplemental feeding and some of the feed
may contain antibiotics. If this is a concern then check with
the rancher, just remember the beef we eat in most civilized
countries is fed with medicated feed.
The closeness to humans may tend to make these
game animals less weary than would be a free range critter. This
can take some of the edge off of the hunt and may make it seem
more like a slaughter, but the best ranches do their best to
keep the animals wild. The thick and thin of it is, if you
would like an exotic trophy to hang in your den then you might
want to think about a ranch as opposed to a hunting safari to a foreign
country. It'll certainly be cheaper.
Some of the Game ranches have accommodations
on site, but the majority do not and you treat it as a day hunt.
You are almost assured to come home with meat strapped over your
hood but depending on the density and your abilities you could
still be skunked. Depending on the ranches policy you may have
to pay by the day, by the kill or a combination of both. Make
sure you are clear on how the charges are structured.
Outfitting: What to expect and how to prepare.
Airboat: Swamp hunting at it's best.
even if you don't have a successful hunt you will have an
experience to remember for a lifetime. These aircraft propulsion
system boats ride on the surface rather than down in the water
like a conventional boat. In fact the shallower the water the easier
it is for an airboat to get up on plane and in fact no water is
necessary once the craft is moving wet grass provides for some
of the fastest traveling. Of course now with the environmental
regulations protecting the everglades you can not just run willy-nilly
crushing everything in site. However in order to gat into the
depths of a huge swamp this may be the only way and out there
you are not likely to run into other hunters. Check on the rules
in the area you plan to hunt regarding shooting from the airboat
as there are some restrictions on this sort or thing, mostly
regarding the platform height. There have been many reports of
people who own their own airboats actually running over the deer
and then shooting them as they wriggle out from underneath. That
is not hunting but come closer to murder.
Swamp Buggy: Everglades deer hunting at a crawl. It is
not that some swamp buggies can't go fast (See Swamp
Buggy Races) but when hunting they just lumber along. Good thing
because the hunter, as opposed to the driver, usually sits way up on an
elevated platform which multiplies the swaying.
