Caving:

Exposing them to caving while young

Caving is a sport that only a select few people choose to embrace. But for those that do there are few places they would rather be than in a cavern away from from all the concepts of living that we picture when planning our day. The unexplored caves hold the greatest lure for spelunkers and are getting hard to find. Almost every cave known to modern man has been explored and possibly even surveyed to provide a map for those that follow.

There are of course the commercial endeavors like the Mammoth Cave and Carlsbad cave that anyone with a few dollars can visit and go in with a guided tour. We recommend this to anyone who is curious and is not prepared to go through tight crawls and squirm in mud. Caving can be fun and adventurous but also dangerous. See our Caving Checklist before going even if you plan to go for just a couple of hours.

The following locations offer some sites to practice your skills in caving. This is by no means a comprehensive list and are hoping some of you out there would like to add to this. See contribute.

Cadomin Cave -  Cadomin Alberta Canada - Huge rooms. surveyed, maps available. Free. See our Canada   or our Alberta page for more information about the country and the  province that this huge cave is located in.

Caving in Arkansas Over 2000 caves to choose from, featuring subterranean lakes and streams, mazes, crystals, fossils, cave creatures such as blind trout and salamanders, and an array of formations with names like flowstone, helictite, stalagmite, and stalactite  13 of the caves are considered public and a fee is charged for admission. See our Arkansas page for additional information on this state.

"Silent Splendor Room"    slient splendor.jpg (26130 bytes) at Cosmic Caverns- Arkansas

Cayman Islands Multitude of unexplored caves - - some of which are reputed to hold pirate treasure.

Antelope Canyon Page Arizona Not exactly a cave, but you are still underground. in these slot canyons. See our page on the colorful State of Arizona.

Naturally like any other sport there is equipment that has either been developed specifically for this one  or at least works well  when coupled with this activity. We will try to cover the basics of what to look for in future editions and yet try  not to  focus on specific brands. Before we can recommend a particular product we will have to test it against similar equipment. Some of this will be in real world testing situations.  These studies will be covered in our upcoming Equipment EvaluationsIf you have any suggestions as to what you would like to see evaluated or would like to volunteer for the Real World testing portion of our evaluations, then contact us by filling out the guestbook and tell us of your interests and in the "comments section" let us know what you would like to help us test. You may have to be patient but as soon as the product comes into the evaluation schedule you will be notified.

Be cautious when in the wilds as Ticks and Chiggers can pose a serious problem.

The more you get to do a sport the more you will enjoy it. We have found that being prepared to leave at a moment notice will increase the number of time that you will actually get out and do it. Ultimately the best way to be prepared is to have all the necessary gear already stored in a "gear trailer". This is a trailer dedicated to this purpose. READ ON.

Being physically fit will make your experiences safer and more enjoyable. We are developing a page devoted to encouraging people to do just this. See the Physical fitness page.
